He, like others of his kind, was one a human who took the Jaegertroth, an oath of fealty to the Heterodyne lineage, then downed the Jaegerbrau, a potion which transformed him into his pretty purple self. Since then, he's been a part of the Heterodyne cavalry, right up until the Heterodyne Boys Bill and Barry disappeared about 20 years ago. At that point, the newly self-appointed dictator of Europe, Baron Klaus Wulfenbach offers to take the Jaegers in, as without some sort of boss controlling them, they're seen wild monsters, and are hated and feared by pretty much everyone. However, the Jaegers' loyalty ultimately remained with the Heterodynes, and thought the Jaeger Generals recognized that they needed Baron's protection, they still needed to search for their missing masters. To do this, a group of volunteers agreed to become detached from the pack, an action and task regarded as a suicide mission.

Maxim was one of those volunteers, along with his companions, Ognian and Dimo, and the trio struck out on their own, completely resigned to never being able to rejoin the pack. A fourth Jaeger, Jenka, occasionally joins them, but she comes and goes, acting as a messenger between them and some mysterious leadership. For twenty years they roamed, more or less keeping out of trouble as they searched for a Heterodyne.

That is, until Othar Tryggvassen, GENTLEMAN ADVENTURER, caught them in the town of Zumzum, and proceeded to play a game of Hangman with them. Being fuzzy on the rules, this meant they ended up hanging from the gallows for two days, until Agatha Clay (Heterodyne) came through with Master Payne's Heterodyne Circus. At first, Agatha avoided them, still not quite willing to accept that she was the Heterodyne heir, but after the show, Jenka rampaged into town, looking for her three missing compatriots. She tried to be reasonable, but no one is ever really keen to listen to Jaegers, so things got out of hand really quickly. This forced Agatha to confront the three hanging monsters, reluctantly ordering them to get Jenka out of the town without hurting anybody, then cutting them free.

Once this task was accomplished and the situation explained to Jenka, she assigned the boys to watching out for Agatha while she left to report this to some mysterious set of superiors. The Boys complied, watching from a distance until trouble once again reared its ugly head, this time in the form of strange thin, white humanoids rushing to attack Master Payne's circus en masse. The boys leaped into the fight gleefully, even moving to collect Lars and Augie at Agatha's command. Once both men were brought to safety, Agatha blew up the bridge by short-circuiting her death ray, cutting off the bridgemonsters' attack. In the after math, the Boys cornered Master Payne, asking him if they can join circus. Their antics keep Master Payne from asking questions, but it's not long before they approach Agatha herself, revealing their motivation, along with all their information on her and ask her permission to help Master Payne with his plan to pass through Sturmhalten quietly. They also explain why they left the pack, and Agatha finally seems to start accepting who she is, embracing a tearful Oggie and reassuring him (and by association, Maxim and Dimo) that she is in fact real.

Dimo turns out to be the main player in Master Payne's scheme, as he's dressed up as one of the Baron's Jaegers when the circus reaches Sturmhalten's gate. This gets them shuffled to the expressway, but unfortunately, the Prince of Sturmhalten gets wind of the Heterodyne circus, and requests that they put on a play for him. Although he enjoys the Heterodyne stories, his true purpose is to try to find the missing Heir using a machine that compares the voices of others to that of Lucrezia Mongfish, Bill Heterodyne's wife and Agatha's mother. Because of this, Agatha is discovered, lured away from the circus, and kidnapped. The Boys don't hear of this until much later, when a messenger from the Prince arrives, pays Master Payne off, and then tells them to leave. Lars, a member of the circus who'd fallen for Agatha, objects to this and insists they turn around to rescue her. Maxim, Oggie, and Dimo agree, and the four of them, plus Krosp go back and form a rescue party. Zeetha meets them outside the castle.

Though they initially were stumped by the castle's electric moat, they started searching the sewers for secret passages because, as Lars said, “it's in all the stories.” They find one, but Anevka, the princess of Sturmhalten, and the Geisterdamen (spooky spider ladies) are already there. The Boys fight them off, and Anevka reveals herself to be on their side, setting them up with guides to get them into the castle. Among them is a Smoke Knight with alternate plans given to him by Anevka. The Rescue Party is trapped in the sewers while the Smoke Knight takes off, reaching the castle and opening the doors for Anevka, who comes in with an army hoping to kill Agatha, who has been implanted with a ghost(?) of Lucrezia Mongfish. Tarvek shelves Anevka, puts a copy of Lucrezia into her clank. Geisterdamen and the Lucrezia clank move several hive engines and "some sort of machine" from Castle Sturmvoraus to ancient caverns. The Rescue Party escapes from the hole they were trapped in, only to discover the Geisterdamen. They go the opposite direction, discovering their home base, and monsters. Dimo loses an arm to them before they can get on an elevator and escape. They emerge from the sewers just in time to witness a gigantic projection that announces a Heterodyne heiress to the world, and claims Klaus is the Other. Lucrezia/Agatha orders Vrin to die, then infects Klaus with a special slaver wasp. The Rescue party then drops in just as Klaus's soldiers corner Lu-Agatha, who attempts to pass herself off as Agatha, only with memory issues thanks to some of the things done to her in Sturmhalten castle. It almost works, but once Dimo says he's going back to Wulfenbach castle to tell the Baron about the slaver wasps, the Baron himself arrives. He figures out that she's Lucrezia and kills Lars, meets Zeetha, Daughter of Chump. Agatha drops a house on the wicked Klaus. Circus creates mass Heterodyne apparition in order to escort them out.

Circus departs for England following Battle of Sturmhalten, except for Agatha, Zeetha, Krosp, and Wooster. They, along with everyone else who is important, converge on Mechanicsburg. Unfortunately, they're not technically allowed into the city until a Heterodyne heir is seated in the castle, so they mostly mill around outside while all sorts of plotty stuff happens. At one point, Gilgamesh Wulfenbach gets hurt fighting off the Knights of Jove, a sacred order dedicated to Lucrezia Mongfish who attacked the city, and they swoop him to escort him to Mama Gkika's, a Jaeger Tavern. There, they get him patched up and bequeath to him a Nice Hat that declares him to be a Schmott Guy. They send him off, while remaining in the area, as Mama Gkika's is as close as they can go.

Maxim challenges Old Man Death, a human who used to ride with the Jaegers and never lost a fight, to a duel for his hat. Wins by tricking him into making him a "hat sandwich." To go.

Meanwhile, Agatha's fixed up the Castle Heterodyne, and the Doom Bell rings, announcing her as the heir to the Heterodyne family. Every little nation swoops down upon Mechanicsburg, as well as all the Jaegermonsters, including the ones formerly a part of the Baron's army. Presumably, the Boys join in the fight as well, and the next time we see them, they're lounging around the Mechanicsburg Museum of Armor and Military Science, acting as sort of an honorguard while Agatha and Zeetha look around. They found Agatha's great grandfather's Sunday Armor (which was basically a clockwork mecha), which Agatha fixed up, and took out for a stroll. Since then, the Boys rejoined the Jaegerpack, defended the city, and generally had a good time chasing off intruders. Once the city was reasonably secured, they helped Agatha gather supplies to build a new and improved lightning stick, which she used to shock the lightning rods of Castle Heterodyne, giving it the last boost of energy it would need to finish repairs.

Character personality:
Jaegermonsters are a group of modified humans that can readily compared to bricks - they're a bit dull, rough around the edges, are hard to break, and are great for throwing through windows. There's never just one of them, either, though they aren't particularly good for building with. They're a bit too rowdy for that, loving a good fight more than anything else, to the point where threatening them with violence only encourages them. This partly is just because only rowdy, battle-loving people become Jaegers, and partly because with their longevity and regeneration abilities, they're pretty darn hard to kill. They don't need to band together to win a fight, so the primary reason they're usually found in large numbers is a social one. They're pack minded, and though they're arranged into ranks and groups, no Jaeger is considered the Alpha - who ever the head of the Heterodyne family is. But they don't serve the Heterodynes because they have to, and this is something they consider a point of pride. They're loyal to the Heterodynes out of love and respect, and if they receive orders they're not fond of, they won't hesitate to ask questions or outright refuse.

While most of these base qualities hold true for Maxim, there is more to him than that. He's as flamboyant, cocksure, optimistic, and carefree as most Jaegers, but he also has a philosophical, broody side - as it says on the comic's character page, he's the most resigned of the wild Jaeger trio. He's more likely to hang back and keep to himself during group activities, watching others instead of interacting. A bit of a lone wolf, an image that isn't too far from the truth, considering he's been separated from the pack for twenty years. This is an action compared to death among the Jaegers, a point that's reinforced by the fact that Old Man Death, a human who used to ride with the Jaegers, commented upon seeing Maxim that the last time he'd seen the Jaegers, they'd said that he was dead. However, he wasn't thrown out for misbehavior, he left of his own volition. When the Heterodyne boys, Bill and Barry went missing, Baron Klaus Wulfenbach offered to take the pack in and give them a place among his army. The Generals recognized that this would be a necessary action, given that most of Europa hated and feared them, but they could not give up on their true leaders. Maxim was a part of the group who voluntarily left the pack to go search for the missing brothers or a Heterodyne heir, leaving the rest of the pack free to stay with the Baron. This shows that Maxim has an extraordinarily caring spirit, to the point where he's willing to sacrifice himself for those close to him. He's also the one who donates his hat to the burial of Lars unprompted, hats being a very important symbol among the Jaegers.

He's not alone in his travels, however, as he has Dimo and Oggie along with him. The three are very close, having gone through the same experience of being separated from the pack at the same time, and they refer to each other as brothers. He is the youngest of the three, with Dimo as the eldest, acting as their sort of leader and always watching out for them. He seems a bit closer to Oggie, however, as they're never shown far apart, and it's Oggie who goes with Maxim when he gets his new hat. They also joke around together a lot, hamming it up while Dimo rolls his eyes at them. It's likely that the three, since leaving the pack, have never really been apart, and that Maxim, no matter how aloof he may act, has never been truly alone. To be separated from them would likely be extremely hard for him, even worse than when he left the pack. At least at that time, he had someone with him who understood. Of course, he's far too stubborn and thick-headed to let it slow him down, but in the mean time, he would probably latch onto whatever was familiar as a way of coping.

Maxim is also a bit smarter than the average Jaeger. Spending time away from the pack has forced him to learn how to think for himself, making him cleverer and trickier than the others (not that that's necessarily saying much). Recently, in his fight with Old Man Death, he's discovered this thing called subtlety, and he's latched onto it much like a teenaged boy and his first car. He loves it, and he sort of knows how it works, but he's still not that great at using it. This is not the only aspect in which he resembles a teenaged boy, either. Though he has confessed that he has never loved, that doesn't stop him from ogling the ladies - or anyone else who catches his eye, for that matter (he is purple, after all)! He's sexy and he knows, and he's not afraid to strut his stuff for the street.

-SAMPLES-
Journal entry sample:
Der Doktors vants me to be communicatink about mein feelinks becauze dey think dot it vill help me reconcile vit mein current schtate ov reality. It seemed like a really silly thing to do, considering that would mean he'd miss all the fun, but here he was, opening his eyes, feeling groggy like he'd been asleep for days. He yawned as he sat up, only to feel a pair of hands on his shoulders, pushing him back down, accompanied by the words, "Relax, you have just become real."

He glanced over at the speaker, taking in a pretty nurse with a reassuring, if condescending, smile, and arched an eyebrow. Just became real? What in the Masters' name did that mean?

It meant that people told stories about him, according to the nurse, and that enough of them believed in him hard enough that he was willed into existence. Which was one of the most ridiculous things he'd ever heard. As his life had included fighting talking rainbow lobster men, shrink rays, and clanks made out of cheese, he was fairly certain that he was a pretty good judge of what was silly and what was not. Besides, lots of people had stories told about them, and they were still real. Like the Masters William and Barry. Sure, sometimes people got the details wrong, but that didn't matter much. He was, and he'd always had been, real. As long as he had his hat...

He reached up and felt he top of his head, eyes going wide. Whipping his head around to face the nurse, one hand grabbed her wrist as she attempted to push him down once more. "Vhere iz my hat?" he demanded, voice dropping to a low growl. She shrank back, threatening to call the orderlies if he did not release her, but he snorted in contempt. Yes, a group of human "orderlies" could contain him. "All Hy vants iz my hat, den Hy vill release hyu," he informed her, giving her wrist a rough squeeze as he leaned in, pulling his lips back to reveal his rows of long, sharp teeth.

She swallowed visibly, glancing towards the door, and said, "I'll just go fetch it, shall I?"

He growled warningly, not entirely trusting her to return his hat, but let her go. A few minutes later, a group of burly humans crowded into the room. It was fun at first, as most free for alls were, but then something jabbed him in the back on the neck, and then his vision swam, and he went to sleep again.

comments

Presumably, the Boys fight as well, and the next time we see them, they're lounging around the Mechanicsburg Museum of Armor and Military Science, acting as sort of an honorguard while Agatha and Zeetha look around.

Personality:

Skills/Powers:
*Saber fencing
*Horseback riding
*General melee combat
*Healing: Enhanced healing capabilities. Shallow cuts and scrapes heal within minutes while deeper cuts take closer to an hour. Broken bones mend within a day or so. Lost limbs can be reattached, but only if it's within an hour or so of being wounded. Any longer than that reduces the chance that they'll heal properly, and capability will be lost. Missing limbs cannot be regrown.
*Longevity: As a part of his enhanced healing abilities, Maxim's aging has slowed significantly, to the point where it's essentially negligible. The eldest Jaegers are about 700 years old, which about when they started being made in the first place.
*Enhanced olfactory senses: Roughly on par with those of a dog. In comparison to other Jaegers, Maxim's sense of smell isn't that great, but it's still better than normal. He does, however, have better hearing than others of his kin, but as they're not really known for having particularly good ears, this really only puts him in the upper range of normal human hearing.

Gear:
All Maxim will bring with him is his clothes, and his cavalry saber.

Why do you want to play this character in this particular setting? I've been playing Maxim roughly since June, and he's been in two games. One of which shut down due to overall lack of player activity, and in the other is an AU setting where he struggled to fit in due to his rough and rowdy nature. It'd be nice to play him someplace where he can stretch out his legs and be himself. Because, being a monster in nature himself, it seems like he'd get a kick out of this place, and it'd be interesting to see what kind of beating he'd take.

Writing Samples: Musebox with Tangled's Rapunzel

comments
